People wonder what’s so great/emotional about this scene so here’s why it moved me (and many others I’d imagine) to tears.

You’ve been on such a roller coaster of fear, anxiety and tension already prior to this, especially with that psychopath chasing Ellie and her butchering him the way she did. So much shit has happened you automatically think its about to get worse. You’re able to pick up on Ellie’s silence and automatically know something is wrong.

The game totally breaks the mould here, especially when Joel goes for the ladder but stops and you know for sure something’s (seemingly) wrong. Then when she sees something and runs off, straight away you assume some more bad shit’s gonna happen, she’s either gonna be shot or an infected’s gonna come out after her or any number of ways to die in this shitty world.

But then after even more tension and buildup as to what the fuck has she seen, you see it. It simply takes your breath away. You’re not ready for it, not ready for something like this after everything bad that’s happened.

Between the surprise, the Giraffe’s reveal, the heart-wrenching music, the breathtaking realism of the scenery, Ellie’s childlike curiosity and wonderment and Joel’s fatherly nature resurfacing after all those years, it creates such an achingly beautiful and moving moment in games and is a perfect showcase on how the medium is an art.

THAT is why this scene is so great.
